Edition Overview
The edition pays special tribute to Matisse’s stay in Polynesia and highlights elements from his masterpiece Window in Tahiti in its design. A detail from this image is recreated in a skilful 3D hand-engraving on the partly blackened Ag 925 sterling silver of the cap. The solid Au 750 rose gold cap top features the Montblanc emblem made of pāua shell to honour the artist’s stay in the South Seas. Inspired by Matisse’s fascination with fabrics, the barrel is crafted from cocobolo wood, engraved and coated with a thin layer of translucent lacquer. The geometric pattern decorating the barrel is based on a traditional design from a ceremonial tapa cloth, one of Matisse’s favourite fabrics. The organic shape of the rose gold-coated clip is an homage to Matisse’s large-scale painting The Sheaf. Engravings on the solid Au 750 rose gold cone echo the pattern of The Sheaf. The handcrafted, solid Au 750 rose gold, partly rhodium-coated nib is embossed with the letter Phi and details from the artwork Polynesia, the Sky. In reference to the golden ratio, the edition is limited to 161 pieces. The edition follows the design principle of effective proportions: the ratio of cap and barrel corresponds approximately to that of the golden ratio.
